Not really understanding all the engineering and physics involved in a steam engine train, from this girls perspective, it's simply a very sexy piece of ingenuity, a slice of Americana, a tribute to those who created it and those who keep it alive.
The train trip from Durango to Silverton and back again, is filled with amazing sites around every bend; deep canyons carved by the Animos river, spectacular mountain views, the sound of the train on the tracks, the chug of the engine and the music of the whistle. Pictures and video don't do it justice.

Our plan was to leave Durango today for Santa Fe and spend a couple days there. However, we feel like we are almost on sensory overload. We've seen and experienced so many wonderful things on this vacation, that we want to save Santa Fe for another time and another experience.
The drive through New Mexico so far, has been so pretty and very much different than Colorado. Personalities. It's fun to see each state show off. In eight hours we'll be home. Day 4 of our Anniversary vacation. |
I never get tired of the view of western Oklahoma. The span west of El Reno to Weatherford, off to the north, is so gorgeous and this morning was no exception. The red of the dirt freshly moistened accentuated the greens of the trees and the lay of the land. I always get a little nostalgic as I travel this part of the country, as my mind travels back to Hammon, OK grandad Turners farm, drums from the reservation, stars, and wide open spaces. I feel a little kinship to the land as I think about my ancestors, the Cherokee people and my granddads people who once walked this land. |
