There's No Place Like Home

Our plan was to leave Durango today for Santa Fe and spend a couple days there. However, we feel like we are almost on sensory overload. We've seen and experienced so many wonderful things on this vacation, that we want to save Santa Fe for another time and another experience.
The drive through New Mexico so far, has been so pretty and very much different than Colorado.
Personalities. It's fun to see each state show off.
In eight hours we'll be home.

Day 4 of our Anniversary vacation.
We are in Durango now and spent the day at the Durango Train Museum. It was actually very interesting. I've never been up inside the locomotive before; it's an amazing piece of engineering. Gene was excited for me to be there with him and he enjoyed telling me about the trains.
Tomorrow we're riding the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge into Silverton and back again. We've taken this train ride before into Silverton but not back. I know it'll be just as beautiful coming back.
Right now, we are sitting on our balcony overlooking the Animas River and the sound is so relaxing.

Well, a girl's gotta have fun in a train museum.

Blessed!
Today, at this time, 40 years ago, Gene and I were getting married.
Following are messages from our sons' on this day.
From Jesse Painter:
Happy anniversary love you mom and dad. PS good message today at church. Hope you have a blessed day and you and dad deepen your love for one each other. And that the Evil one that wants to steal your joy and love for each be held at bay by the work of the Holy Spirit. May your minds be open to the one who provokes the anger and arguments. May you both have eyes to see who at work when there is tension between each other. May Satan not have his way with you this day, or the rest of the week. The Lord my God I feel put this on my heart to keep you to in my prayers and to share with you.
From Christopher Painter:
Happy Anniversary! You two are the best parents a person could ever hope for. Both of your lives, as far as I am concerned, could not have been more successful. You both love deeply and unconditionally and have brought up two sons who have learned to do the same. Mom, I love you and thank you for all you have taught me. Always to ask more questions. That has kept my path true and free from being led astray. Dad, your character is steadfast and your heart is pure. You have given me a role model to aspire to. To me, you are what all men should be like. Humble, happy right where you are, and above all, honest and loving. Have a great dinner. Love you guys with all my heart.

40th Anniversary

Today was amazing!
We started out the day in Creede visiting the Creede museum which was filled with amazing artifacts from the past, went on a mine tour that was built to educate people on the evolution of mining and then drove the dirt road on Bacholors Loop that made us push past our fears. Holy cow!!! It was very scary ( for me at least). Steep grades, narrow roads. But it was so beautiful and the history that lay in ruins on the mountains leaves you in awe of the shear magnitude of it all. Look closely at the pictures to see just how far up the structures were built; all to extract silver.
We finished our day having an amazing dinner on the patio at Antlers Lodge with the Rio Grande as our backdrop. Our server (who was one of the leading actors of the play we went to last night (Kind of Red) serenaded us at the end of our dinner.
We finished our evening with a game of pool in the Lodge. Gene won of course! He's still a very good pool player.
I don't take any of this for granted and I'm thankful and blessed.

Wishing for a canvas and a brush

Shadow, light, color. God, the master artist.
I was wishing so badly to just set up an easel and paint the things that were taking my breath away. To just stand in one location, take it all in and put it on canvas.
Our journey to Lake City, CO was filled with amazing views around every bend.

The first day and night of our vacation was amazing.
The mountains coming into Creede, CO. were unlike any I have ever seen before and our little cabin on the Rio Grand did not disappoint. Five feet from the edge of our porch is the clear flowing Rio Grand.
The perfect end to the night was time in the hot tub down the road. While we enjoyed the sound of the flowing river and warm water, gentle rain drops fell.
Our cabin is the first one in the picture. (You can see our car beside it )

Clayton, NM

The first picture is of Rabbit Ear Mountain and the second is of the Capulin Volcano in Raton, NM. The volcano is on the far right of the photo.

But what I really loved was the play of sunlight.

Western Oklahoma

I never get tired of the view of western Oklahoma. The span west of El Reno to Weatherford, off to the north, is so gorgeous and this morning was no exception. The red of the dirt freshly moistened accentuated the greens of the trees and the lay of the land.
I always get a little nostalgic as I travel this part of the country, as my mind travels back to Hammon, OK grandad Turners farm, drums from the reservation, stars, and wide open spaces. I feel a little kinship to the land as I think about my ancestors, the Cherokee people and my granddads people who once walked this land.
